PANELIST Dr. Mark Ghaly was appointed Secretary of the
California Health and Human Services Agency in early 2019 by
Governor Gavin Newsom. In serving California, Dr. Ghaly has the
privilege of working with partners across sectors and disciplines
to improve the lives and life chances of ALL Californians.
This has been especially true during our response to the
COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Ghaly is a primary care pediatrician
who continues to use his clinical and community experiences,
working in Californias health care safety net system, to inform a whole person,
whole community approach to integrating services so they are equity-anchored
and person-centered for ALL, but especially the most vulnerable Californians.
Dr. Ghaly holds the deep belief that together our collective efforts can not only
serve Californians well today but set us on a path where ALL Californians have
a brighter and healthier future. Nothing he does can be done well without the
support of his wife, Dr. Christina Ghaly, and his four young children.
PANELIST Alberto M. Carvalho has served as
Superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District
(LAUSD) since February 2022. Since then, he has led the

local municipalities, made progress in greening schools, and
secured upgraded credit ratings, generating millions in savings.
Prior to LAUSD, Carvalho led Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS).
During his 14-year tenure, M-DCPS became one of the nation’s highest-
performing urban school systems, winning the 2012 Broad Prize, earning
systemwide accreditation from AdvancED, and receiving numerous accolades
from the College Board and Magnet Schools of America. As a result of his
transformational leadership, Carvalho has been recognized as Superintendent
of the Year by AASA, the Council of the Great City Schools, and the National
Association for Bilingual Education.
Carvalho has been appointed to several boards, committees, and task
forces, including the National Assessment Governing Board and the National
Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. He currently serves on
the Advisory Committee for the Harvard Program on Education Policy and
Governance, the Homeland Security Academic Partnership Council, the Posse

The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation was established in 1961 by the founder of the
Ralph M. Parsons Company, a renowned global firm specializing in engineering
and construction. In 1976, the Foundation became fully independent from the
company, in which it now has no financial interests. Today, the Foundation and
Parsons Corporation are completely separate entities and share only Mr. Parsons’
name.
The Foundation's grantmaking focuses on work within Los Angeles County, one
of the most exciting, dynamic, complex, and quickly evolving environments in
the country. The regions racial, ethnic, cultural and economic diversity presents
extraordinary opportunities for nonprofits seeking to create healthy and vibrant
communities and improve the lives of the people they serve.
The Parsons Foundation strives to support the work of the Countys best nonprofit
organizations, recognizing that communities thrive when all individuals are able
to access the resources they need to feel safe, stable, and engaged. The majority
of their grantmaking is for unrestricted general operating support because they
recognize that organizations need flexibility in order to fulfill their missions and
meet community needs. To strengthen the fabric of Los Angeles, they invest
in highly effective civic and cultural, education, health, and human services
organizations. The focus is on agencies providing direct services.
To The Foundation, success is measured by the achievements of the people their
grantees serve. They are grateful to their nonprofit partners who work tirelessly
to realize a positive vision for Los Angeles, and they celebrate the astounding
accomplishments of these high-performing nonprofits through their grantmaking.

Want To Support a Charity?
First Consider Your Charitable Gifting Options
Americans usually give to charity for two main reasons: to support a
cause or organization they care about or to leave a legacy through their
support.
Some people are comfortable with their current gifting strategies.
Others may want a more advanced strategy, which can sometimes
maximize their gift and generate potential tax benets. A knowledgeable
nancial team of a Wealth Manager, CPA, and Attorney can help you
determine how these strategies work and which can best be used to help
you accomplish your goals.
