Dear Division Colleagues,
Campus is full again and the new school year is off and running! First day of
class is not until Monday, but this week has already been full of energy and
excitement.
Another successful Move2BU is in the books! A HUGE thank you to
everyone who was involved it truly is an all-hands-on-deck effort. This
year over 2500 volunteers (including a strong showing from the
Division) helped over 2500 students move-in over the last two
days (a pretty good volunteer to student ratio!).!All told when you
add-in early move-in and unassisted move-ins we now have roughly 4100
students moved into residence. With Alexander and Memorial offline for
renovations this year, that represents about 90% of our students with
bookings being moved in, with the remaining 10% likely tricking in over the
weekend.
In addition to successfully moving the students in, the logistics of such a
large event were also a great success! Another HUGE shout-out to all
involved, but particularly to Campus Living & Learning and Campus
Recreation for their efforts in planning and preparing for such a successful
move-in. Planning starts months in advance, and they again have done an
amazing job attending to all the details. A shout out is also due to our
campus partners that chipped in and particularly the BUPD and Aramark
crews for all they did working in the heat. Speaking of the heat, although we
got a little bit of respite Wednesday, both days were still quite hot and
managing heat and hydration for that many people took a strong team effort
and lots of planning. Bravo to all those who had a part in Move2BU!!
Also happening this week is the start of Welcome Week, our official launch
to the beginning of the Baylor experience for our newest students. There
have been smaller events throughout the week (see the schedule HERE),
but with most students moved-in, last night marked the biggest event of
Welcome Week by attendance, The Baylor Family Picnic.!Roughly 7500
people registered to attend the picnic!!The Baylor Family Picnic marks
one last family event before moms, dads, grandparents, siblings, aunts, and
more say goodbye to their first-year student and launch them into their
Baylor experience. Lots of excitement still to come though in Welcome Week
including the Spirit Rally, The Big Event, and the Candlelight Worship
service.

Spotlight On New Staff
We’re continuing to shine a light this summer on some of our newest
Student Life staff members. Newer team members were featured each issue
this summer, and now it will be regular practice throughout the year as
people join our division. Enjoy getting to know each of them! This issue we
have:
Debbie Alvarado, Appointment Clerk/Receptionist
– Health Center
Fun fact:!“Many moons ago, when I was in Marketing &
Public Relations, I coordinated the first-ever fly-over at
Floyd Casey Stadium in which the game ball was "dropped" in via a female
parachuter, dressed as Wendy from the Wendy's Hamburger Franchise
(which was my client at the time).!It involved working with the FAA to gain
clearance that day and also securing a $1 million insurance policy!!Can’t
recall the exact year, but it would have been between 19952000.!That
publicity stunt was part of a year-long Neighborhood Marketing Campaign
targeted at the Baylor community, tied into the S. 5th!Street Wendy’s near
campus.!As a result of this campaign, the franchisee was awarded the
International Marketing Award (Diamond Award) that year, presented by
Dave Thomas.!!
What I enjoy most about working at Baylor:!“Family ... everywhere
you look, everywhere you go, no matter what department you work in, it
feels like all employees have this common web … it's something larger than
ourselves—it’s like working with an extended Family every day.!Love it ....”
A world of thanks to all of you who volunteered to help move in literally
thousands of new Baylor Bears this week. We also can't go without
celebrating two of our newest bears on campus that are a bit fuzzier than
the rest of the incoming class. Welcome to the family, Indy and Belle!
