Biographical Note:
Franklin Burt, son of William and Sallee (Sarah) Grump Burt, was born March17, 1809 in Scott
County, Kentucky. In 1833, he married Martha Craig, and in 1835, they moved to the northern
part of Callaway County, Missouri, near Concord. Burt died in 1873.

The collection has been arranged by format.
Scope and Content Note:
The most significant portions of this small collection are the tax assessment book (circa 1858)
and the diary. The former lists landowners, number of acres owned, location of lands, number of
slaves owned, personal property owned, valuation of each, and taxes assessed. Burt's diary, with
its brief entries, describes routine farm work in the mid-nineteenth century. Scattered entries
refer to local events during the Civil War.

notes. Includes an estate inventory dated 1860.

Tax assessment book, c. 1858. Alphabetical list of landowners, including
acreage owned, location, and valuation. Also includes valuation of slaves
and personal property and taxes assessed. Pages 150, 160 and 161 contain
an undated autobiographical sketch and genealogical information.

Diary, 1859-1872. Brief daily entries, including weather conditions, wind
direction, and activities. May 1868-May 1869 entries are not included.
