About the Artists
Dr. Alexander Pershounin has performed extensively throughout Europe
and United States in both classical and jazz settings and has been
featured as a performer and composer on such internationally recognized
music events as Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Pori Jazz Festival in
Finland, Europe’s Jazz Contest in Belgium, and New Orleans Jazz Fest,
among many others. His performing credits include collaboration projects
and appearances with world-class artists ranging from Bob Berg, Mulgrew
Miller, Conrad Herwig, and Benny Golson to Itzhac Perlman, Yo Yo Ma,
and Ray Charles, among many other prominent artists. Dr. Pershounin
holds DMA and MFA degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi
and MFA and BM degrees from Russia’s most prestigious music institution:
Gnessins' State Academy of Music in Moscow. Before arriving to UNI as a
bass studio and liberal arts core instructor Dr. Pershounin had taught at
Columbus State University, Minnesota State University Moorhead, Westfield
State College, University of Southern Mississippi, and various music
institutions in Russia. His students won national and international
competitions, were accepted in most prestigious music institutions, and
successfully developed their own professional music careers.
Dr. Robert Washut is Emeritus Professor of Music at the University of Northern
Iowa where he retired in 2018. He served as Director of Jazz Studies from
1980-2002. An accomplished jazz composer and arranger, Washut has
many works published and has served as jazz composer-in-residence at
several universities around the country. At UNI he was the recipient of the
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Orfeus award in 2018, the Distinguished Scholar
Award in 2015, and the CHAS Dean's Award for Excellence in Scholarship,
Research, and Creative Activity in 2014. He received the Outstanding
Teaching Award in 1996 and, in 2019, was bestowed with the Iowa
Bandmaster Association’s Honorary Lifetime Membership.
Josh Hakanson is a musician and educator based in Cedar Falls, IA. On
drum set, Hakanson has played professionally in the Northwest and
Midwest in a range of musical styles, encompassing jazz, rock, hip-hop,
and fusion. As a student and professional performer, he has made
appearances with such musicians as Bobby Shew, Adam Kolker, John
Wojciechowski, Luis Bonilla, Benny Green, Steve Owen, Idit Shner, Joe
Manis, Bob Washut, Chris Merz, Dave Rezek, Don Jaques, and many
others. As an educator, he has taught private lessons to all ages, coached
large and small jazz ensembles at the collegiate level, and administered
music clinics at the middle and high school level.
Nolan Schroeder (b. 1992) is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa,
where he completed a BA in Jazz Studies in 2014. Schroeder currently lives
in Waterloo, and performs regularly across Eastern Iowa. He appears often
with The Blake Shaw Quintet, Thrio, Wave Cage, Bob Dorr, Diplomats of
Solid Sound, The Candymakers, Commons Collective, and writes and
arranges for Goose Town. Schroeder has also been lucky to share the
stage with such notable musicians/groups as Kenny Wheeler, Doug
Lawrence, Donny McCaslin, John Clayton, Dick Oatts, Peter Apfelbaum,
Ignacio “Nachito” Herrera, The Temptations, Bernadette Peters, The Hit
Men, Sandy Hackett’s Rat Pack, and internationally renowned Thai
saxophonist Koh Mr. Saxman. In addition to performing across the Midwest,
he has toured in New York and California, as well as Italy, Thailand, and
Brazil. Schroeder has also been building a catalog of recorded work with
several groups, including The Al Naylor Quintet, Commons Collective, Bob
Dorr and The Blue Band, The Candymakers, Thrio, Wave Cage, UNI Jazz
Band One, and other various artists. He has also had the privilege of being
part of the Corridor Jazz Project as a guest artist in 2015, 2017, 2019 and
2020.
Kevin Boehnke graduated from UNI in 2019, with a Biochemistry degree
and minors in general music and biology. While attending UNI, Kevin
performed with ensembles including UNI Jazz Band One, UNI Jazz
Panthers, Symphonic Band, and many jazz combos. Between 2017-2019,
Kevin recorded three albums with award-winning songwriter Chad Elliott
including: Ringgold, Rest Heavy, and King Pelican. Kevin performed on an
episode of the PBS special Sun Studio Sessions with Chad Elliott & the
Redemptions. As a solo artist, Kevin released his first EP in 2019, titled Find
Your Way. Kevin is currently a first-year student at the University of Iowa
College of Dentistry.
