BOWL SEASON PREVIEW
Eight Conference USA teams are set to compete in
bowl games in 2021, ranging from Friday, Dec. 17,
through Thursday, Dec. 23. The eight-team represen-
tation ties for second-most in league history.
BAHAMAS BOWL - FRI., DEC. 17 - 11 AM CT
Bowl Seson for C-USA nd for ll of college footbll
kicks o on Fridy, Dec. 17, with the Bhms Bowl,
which pits Middle Tennessee (6-6) ginst MAC foe
Toledo (7-5) t 11 .m. CT on ESPN in Nssu.
The Blue Riders re led oensively by C-USA All-
Freshmn Tem QB Nichols Vttito, who strt-
ed four gmes in 2021. Vttito completed 92-136
psses for 777 yrds with five touchdowns for Middle
Tennessee. The Blue Riders, the ntionl leder in
forced turnovers (31) nd defensive touchdowns
(6), won four of their finl six gmes, including
27-17 win t Florid Atlntic in the finl week of the
regulr seson to ern bowl eligibility. Defensively,
the Blue Riders re pced by S Reed Blnkenship
rnked second in C-USA with 106 totl tckles, DE
Jordn Ferguson, who rnked second in C-USA with
15.5 tckles-for-loss nd 8.0 scks, LB DQ Thoms,
who lso hs 15.5 tckles-for-loss nd DB Quincy
Riley, who is second ntionlly in interceptions (5).
Toledo enters ply hving finished 5-3 in MAC ply,
nd the Rockets won their lst three gmes nd four
of their finl five contests. This will be the first-ever
meeting between Middle Tennessee nd Toledo.
Conference USA nd the MAC re tied 3-3 ll-time
in the Bhms Bowl series, nd this mrks the sec-
ond trip to Nssu for ech school. One will hed
home to the United Sttes with their first Bhms
Bowl victory, s Middle Tennessee fell 45-31 to West-
ern Michign in 2015, while Toledo dropped close
contest, 35-32 to FIU in the 2018 edition of the gme.

in the country, Biley Zppe, who is Mnning
Awrd Finlist, ws the C-USA MVP nd first-tem
ll-conference performer. Zppe, one of four trns-
fers from Houston Bptist, leds the ntion in pss-
ing yrds (5,545), pssing yrds per gme (426.5),
nd pssing touchdowns (56). Zppe is just 278
yrds from the FBS single-seson record for pssing
yrds (Texs Tech’s B.J. Symons in 2003 - 5,833) nd
four pssing touchdowns (LSU’s Joe Burrow in 2019
- 60). WR Jerreth Sterns, second-tem All-Ameri-

The Hilltoppers won seven of their lst eight gmes
fter opening the seson 1-4, nd fell 49-41 in the
2021 Ryn Conference USA Chmpionship Gme in
Sn Antonio to the 12-1 UTSA Rodrunners. Defen-
sively, WKU is led by C-USA Defensive Plyer of the
Yer, DE DeAngelo Mlone, who hs 88 tckles,
legue-leding 16.5 tckles-for-loss, 8.0 scks nd
four forced fumbles. WKU lso hs forced 27 turn-
overs, which rnks fourth in the country.
Applchin Stte won six of its lst seven gmes,
with its only loss coming t No. 23 Louisin in the
Sun Belt Chmpionship Gme in Lfyette (24-16).
In terms of common opponents, the Mountineers
cme bck to knock o Mrshll 31-30 t home on
Sept. 23, while WKU bet the Thundering Herd 51-23
in Huntington, West Virgini, on the rod on Nov. 27.

UTEP (7-5) is bck bowling for the first time since
2014 trip to the New Mexico Bowl. The Miners re
set to tke on Mountin West foe Fresno Stte (9-3)
in Albuquerque on ESPN t 1:15 p.m. CT. UTEP com-
bined for just five wins between 2017-20, so their
incredible turnround to seven under hed coch

lines in ll of college footbll this seson.
The Miners were impressive defensively, llow-
ing just 24.8 points per gme nd 339.4 yrds per
gme. UTEP ws led by LB Breon Howrd, who led
the Miners with 97 totl tckles, 6.5 tckles-for-loss,
1.5 scks nd fumble recovery in 12 strts. DB
Dy’Vonne Inyng ws focl point in the second-
ry for UTEP, nd he picked o tem-best three
psses nd broke up seven psses on the seson.
The combintion of DEs Prise Amewhule nd
Jdrin Tylor totled 12.0 scks nd 17 qurter-

lines throughout the course of the seson. Oensive-
ly, WR Jcob Cowing, First-Tem All-Conference
USA selection, cught 67 psses for 1,330 yrds with
seven touchdowns, while fellow WR Justin Grrett
huled in 49 psses for 659 yrds nd four scores.
Those two trgets were key in the development
of QB Gvin Hrdison, who threw for 2,965 yrds
nd 17 touchdowns nd enters the bowl pper-
nce rnking third ntionlly in yrds per comple-
tion (15.94). The Miners’ eril ttck ws blnced
nicely on the ground by the committe of RBs Ronld

Fresno Stte, winners of five of its lst six, enters
ply without its hed coch, Klen DeBoer, who ws
nmed to the sme position t Wshington in erly
December. The Bulldogs will be led by interim hed
coch Lee Mrks, despite the hiring of Je Tedford
for his second stint in Fresno. It is uncler who will be
strting under center for the Bulldogs, s QB Jke
Hener originlly entered the trnsfer portl when
DeBoer deprted for Wshington, but hs since
returned to the Centrl Vlley following Tedford’s
ppointment. Hener threw for 3,810 yrds with 32

the Gsprill Bowl due to COVID-relted cncel-

the two progrms.
