Summer 2020
Dear Professor Garbologist:
Dear Professor Garbologist: Wrapping paper, ribbons,
Christmas lights, ornaments, greeting cards, bows,
toy packaging, tape, boxes...HELP! I want to do the
right thing with my recycling this Christmas Season
but how do I know what is and is not recyclable?
Jessica- Mount Pleasant.
Hello Jessica:
Thanks for writing in with a great question.
The short answer is that the only thing you list that is
actually recyclable is corrugated cardboard boxes.
Non-working Christmas lights may be taken to Lowes.
For a more detailed listing of what you can recycle please
see chart on page 3, or email us at the address below.
Dear Professor Garbologist: I’m hoping Rudolph has
room in the sleigh for a new TV for Christmas. How can
I properly get rid of our old TV? Nate- West Burlington.
Hello Nate: Great question! Electronics need to be
properly disposed of in order to protect our environment.
Many electronic items contain substances like mercury,
lead, cadmium, and other materials that can be very
dangerous to humans and our environment. Electronics
with screens are banned from the landll and should
be taken to the HazChem Center for disposal during
regular business hours of 8am-4pm M-F and 8am-noon
on Saturday. Fees do apply.
Please do not drop off a
TV at Salvation Army or
similar type organization.
If you wish to donate a TV
check with websites such as
freecycle.org or craigslist.
com. If you have additional
questions please
contact the
HazChem Center
at 319-753-8758.

Help Santa get to Area Recyclers!
Santa loves the Earth and wants to do his part
to protect our environment. He has lots of
corrugated cardboard on his sleigh and needs
to unload it at Area Recyclers before he
can nish his work
on Christmas Eve!
Recycling resolutions or a
resolution to recycle?
How many of us will, in about six weeks,
welcome the new year by making pledges,
vows, and resolutions? Isn’t it funny
how we tend to turn January 1st into an
excuse to reform ourselves? Despite our
best intentions, however, many of us end
up discarding or abandoning those plans,
often before we can even glimpse the end
of January. Will this year bring another
round of resolutions that fade with the
passing of the days? Let’s hope not. Let’s
propose to actually achieve some of those
lofty goals, beginning with one. One seems
easy, right? One goal, and the best way to
achieve a goal is to make it reasonable to
accomplish. What if we all pledged to make
a change for the better this next January;
one habit we improve or perhaps one bad
habit we eliminate? My proposal to you
is this….instead of “recycling” resolutions
from years past, which we sometimes have
not achieved anyway, why not make a fresh
resolution- a resolution to begin recycling
or to improve your current efforts? This
“recycling resolution”, so to speak, could be
as simple as vowing to no longer throw that
water or “hydration beverage” bottle into
the trash bag or to put a box for recycling
paper underneath that printer at work.
Starting small can lead to bigger and better
things. New Year’s resolutions can be quite
powerful in motivating us to better ourselves
and improve our impact on the world
around us. This is why making a recycling
resolution is all the more important…
the payoff is real, not just for you but
also for your family, your neighbors, your
community, your state… little splashes that
send ripples around the world.

PROPERLY RECYCLE TELEVISIONS
AND OTHER ELECTRONICS WITH
SCREENS BY BRINGING THEM TO
THE HAZCHEM CENTER OF SE IOWA,
LOCATED INSIDE THE DMC
REGIONAL LANDFILL.
TV sets and computer monitors are
safe when they’re viewed under normal
conditions in homes and oces. But
when owners discard or dismantle
them, toxic materials inside can be a
serious hazard to your health and leak
into the environment if the sets are not
properly recycled. Here’s what’s inside:
Lead: Sets with cathode ray tubes
(CRTs) contain 4 to 8 pounds. Used
in screens and soldered circuit boards.
Can cause brain damage, blood
disorders, kidney damage and birth
defects. Children are particularly
vulnerable.
Mercury: Used in lamps of at-screen
liquid crystal displays (LCDs). High
levels can contribute to brain
and kidney damage, birth
defects.
Cadmium: Used in phosphor
coating of CRT screens. A
carcinogen that accumulates in the
body and can cause kidney damage.
Barium: Used inside CRTs. Short-
term exposure can cause neurological
problems and damage to heart, liver
and spleen.
BFRs: Brominated ame retardants are
used in wiring. Can disrupt hormones
and immune system, especially in
children.
PVC: Polyvinyl chloride insulates
wires. Can emit highly toxic fumes
when burned and can leach out and
contaminate the ground if not handled
properly.

It’s not just a courtesy, it’s a policy
The fall season means the leaves are coming down and the trees, if not already, will
soon be bare. This is a friendly reminder that all loads coming to the landfill, including
leaves, grass, tree limbs/branches/twigs and sticks, must be secured and covered. A sign
posted at the entry to the DMC Regional Landfill reminds visitors of the landfill’s cover-
your-load policy. All vehicles must have loads tarped and secured when driving down
any roadway or risk a citation from local law enforcement and risk being cited a $10
surcharge for unsecured loads at the landfill. Driving with loose loads can create dan-
gerous road hazards and shows little respect to others on the road. For questions about
the signage or the tarping/cover your load policy, please contact the DMC Regional
Waste Commission at 753-8126 or 1-800-216-8126.

What is
Recycled
2 You?
A: Recycled 2 Yo u is a small gift
shop located inside the Area
Recyclers building. The shop
features a changing variety of
unique new products made from
recycled materials. It is not a thrift
shop or re-sale shop.
How much do items cost at
Recycled 2 You?
A: There are items for sale for as
little as $4 for bicycle magnets
to $45 for deluxe birdfeeders.
The store’s purpose is to raise
awareness of what can be done
with recycled materials, not to
generate huge prots.
What’s the most popular
item sold at Recycled 2 You?
A: That’s a tough question to
answer because everyone has
different tastes. The birdfeeders
and birdhouses made from recycled
plastic (and manufactured here in
Iowa!) are always a good seller and
great gift item. We recently stocked
up on bottle lights and wine bottle
faces. The recycled baskets, items
made from bicycle parts, and
recycled glass wind chimes, sun
catchers, and ornaments are always
a hit. The sports fans have been
very happy with our selection of
jersey purses, and mini-bags for
Hawkeye, Cyclones, Cardinals,
Cubs, Twins, Vikings, and Chiefs
fans. The jewelry and lamps made
from recycled skateboards have
been catching on, too. Stop in soon
to see our complete collection!
What are your hours?
Phone number?
A: The store is open
Monday-Friday 8am-4pm.
We can try to accommodate
special hours as needed during the
Christmas shopping season. Our
phone number is (319) 753-8126.
