CAMPUS LANDMARKS
BASILICA OF THE SACRED HEART | “BASILICA” OR “BASILICA CRYPT”
Consecrated on August 15, 1888, it was elevated to the rank of Minor Basilica on January 17,
1992. Neo-gothic in style, the Basilica is home to the largest collection of 19th-Century French
stained glass in the world, as well as the oldest carillon in North America. It was added to
the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The Basilica Crypt refers to the lower level of
the Basilica.
CHAPLAIN CORBY OF GETTYSBURG SCULPTURE | “FAIR CATCH CORBY”
The 109-year-old sculpture, with its right hand raised in blessing, commemorates the moment
on July 2, 1863, when Civil War chaplain Rev. William Corby, C.S.C., of the 88th New York Infantry
of the Irish Brigade and future Notre Dame president, gave general absolution to both Union
and Confederate troops during the Battle of Gettysburg.
CLARKE MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN | “STONEHENGE”
The fountain stands as a tribute to those men and women who served in World War II, the
Korean War, the Vietnam War, and during times of peace. Within the memorial’s center, another
fountain sits atop a sphere, representing the Earth.
GROTTO OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES | “THE GROTTO”
The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes is one-seventh the size of the famed French shrine where
the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette on 18 occasions in 1858. Gifted by Rev. Thomas
Carroll in 1896, boulders from surrounding farms, most weighing two tons or more, were used
in its construction. A small piece of stone from the original grotto in France is located on the
right-hand side of the shrine directly below the statue of Mary. Outdoor Masses are celebrated
regularly; and the Rosary is prayed every day of the year at 6:45 p.m., rain or shine.
HESBURGH LIBRARY | “TOUCHDOWN JESUS”
Unveiled in 1964, the “Word of Life” mural on the Hesburgh Library became known as
“Touchdown Jesus” due to the raised position of Christ’s arms and the mural’s location directly
behind the north end zone of Notre Dame Stadium.
MAIN BUILDING | “GOLDEN DOME”
The Main Building is the centerpiece of Notre Dame’s campus and where the University’s
administration is headquartered. Atop the famous Golden Dome is a 19-foot-tall statue of
Notre Dame — Our Lady, Mary, the Mother of God.
MOSES SCULPTURE | “FIRST DOWN MOSES”
Commissioned in 1962, the statue depicts Moses standing on Mt. Sinai while chastising the
Israelites for falling into idolatry. He is holding the Ten Commandments in his left hand while
pointing his right hand to the sky to proclaim there is only one God.
OUR LADY OF THE LAKE WORLD PEACE PLAZA | “PEACE PLAZA”
Unveiled in 2022, the Peace Plaza was presented through the generosity and legacy of William
J. Pulte, Master Builder (1932-2018). Guided by the belief in the inherent dignity of all people,
Bill shared his passion for world peace with all those he encountered. It is his family’s wish
that this plaza will be a place for reflection, prayer, and peace to all who visit.
SACRED HEART OF JESUS STATUE
In the heart of God Quad, you encounter the Sacred Heart of Jesus statue. At the base of the
statue are the words “Venite Ad Me Omnes” which translates as, “Come to me, everyone.” As
Jesus stretched out his arms on the Cross when he died for us, he stands ready with a heart
wide open to welcome all people into his loving embrace.
Specific locations can be found on the campus map, pages 18-20.
