Training requirements for new applicants
who have never held a permit or held a
permit issued prior to Jan 1, 2011:
Applicant must show compleon of training
within a 24 month period before the
applicaon date.
Compleon of any Naonal Rie Associaon
(NRA) handgun safety training course.
Compleon of any handgun safety training
course available to the general public oered
by law enforcement agency, community
college, college, public or private instuon, or
rearms training school, ulizing instructors
cered by the NRA or certain other rearms
training cerfying bodies, such as the Iowa Law
Enforcement Academy.
Compleon of any handgun safety training
course oered for security guards,
invesgators, special depues, or any division
of law or security enforcement approved by
Iowa Department of Public Safety.
If former member of Armed Forces,
compleon of small arms training while serving
with the armed forces of the United States
with honorable discharge or general discharge
under honorable condions (at any me prior
to applicaon)
If current member of Armed Forces,
possession of a cercate of compleon of
basic training with a service record of
successful compleon of small arms training
and qualicaon
Compleon of a hunter educaon program
approved by the natural resource commission
pursuant to secon 483A.27, if the program
includes handgun safety training and
compleon of the handgun safety training is
included on the cercate of compleon.
Training requirements for new applicants
who held a permit aer Jan 1, 2011 but are
outside the renewal period:
Applicant will need to apply for a new permit
Applicant is not required to present proof of
addional training
“Renewal Applicaon”
Applicaons must be led within a 60 day
window, beginning 30 days prior to the
expiraon date or 30 days past the expiraon
date of a current permit to be eligible for the
statutory $25.00 renewal fee.
Applicant will need to apply for a renewal
There is no requirement for addional training.
Applicants who have moved to a dierent
county are able to renew their permit in their
new county of residence within the 60 day
window. They will need to provide an updated
drivers license, permit from previous county,
and approved training documentaon.
An Iowa nonprofessional permit to carry weapons
allows a permit holder concealed or open carrying
of handguns, ries, shotguns, excluding those
classied by Iowa law as oensive weapons. A
nonprofessional permit to carry weapons is valid
ve years from the date of issuance. A
nonprofessional permit is also valid to use as a
permit to acquire throughout its validity.
An Iowa professional permit to carry may be
issued when a person’s employment reasonably
juses that person going armed. A Professional
permit to carry weapons is valid for one year from
the date of issuance.
Applicaon procedures for an Iowa
professional and nonprofessional permit to
carry weapons:
1) Submit a fully and accurately completed and
signed applicaon for permit to carry weapons.
2) Submit rearm training documentaon if
required.
3) Submit a copy of an Iowa driver’s license or non-
operator’s idencaon card, containing a Bremer
County address.
A) $50 fee for new applicaon
B) $25 fee for renewal applicaon
4) The State of Iowa will mail your permit card in 5-
7 business days to the mailing address stated on
the applicaon.
