Any person who desires to acquire ownership of
any pistol or revolver shall rst obtain an annual
permit.
Applicaon procedures for an Iowa permit to
acquire pistols/revolvers:
1) Submit a fully and accurately completed and
signed applicaon.
2) Submit a copy of an Iowa driver’s license or non-
operator’s idencaon card , containing a
Bremer County address.
3) Submit payment of $25.00
4) The State of Iowa will mail your permit card in 5-7
business days to the mailing address stated on the
applicaon.
**Cash in the exact amount of the permit
fee is required or checks are accepted**
The Bremer County Sheri’s Oce processes and
issues permits during normal business hours of
Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Handgun safety training may be taken by any
NRA cered instructor.

This site provides concealed carry permit
reciprocity maps by state; you can search
states that honor my permit, or permits
honored by state.
Iowa will honor any valid carry permit
issued by any other state and will grant all
privileges to such permit holders as those
granted to Iowa residents.
Iowa permits are valid unl expiraon
despite the permit holder’s residence,
within the state of Iowa.
A permit holder who wants any
informaon changed on their valid permit,
including an address change, must apply
for a new permit, and pay the new permit
fee of $50.
A permit holder who loses their permit
may go to the county which issued their
inial permit to obtain a duplicate permit
for the $25 fee. This permit will contain
the exact same informaon and dates as
the inial permit.

“New Applicaon”
Training requirements for new applicants
who have never held a permit or held a
permit issued prior to Jan 1, 2011:
Applicant must show compleon of training
within a 24 month period before the
applicaon date.
Compleon of any Naonal Rie Associaon
(NRA) handgun safety training course.
Compleon of any handgun safety training
course available to the general public oered
by law enforcement agency, community
college, college, public or private instuon, or
rearms training school, ulizing instructors
cered by the NRA or certain other rearms
training cerfying bodies, such as the Iowa Law
Enforcement Academy.
Compleon of any handgun safety training
course oered for security guards,
invesgators, special depues, or any division
of law or security enforcement approved by
Iowa Department of Public Safety.
If former member of Armed Forces,
compleon of small arms training while serving
with the armed forces of the United States
with honorable discharge or general discharge
under honorable condions (at any me prior
to applicaon)
If current member of Armed Forces,
possession of a cercate of compleon of
basic training with a service record of
successful compleon of small arms training
and qualicaon
Compleon of a hunter educaon program
approved by the natural resource commission
pursuant to secon 483A.27, if the program
includes handgun safety training and
compleon of the handgun safety training is
included on the cercate of compleon.
Training requirements for new applicants
who held a permit aer Jan 1, 2011 but are
outside the renewal period:
Applicant will need to apply for a new permit
Applicant is not required to present proof of
addional training
“Renewal Applicaon”
Applicaons must be led within a 60 day
window, beginning 30 days prior to the
expiraon date or 30 days past the expiraon
date of a current permit to be eligible for the
statutory $25.00 renewal fee.
Applicant will need to apply for a renewal
There is no requirement for addional training.
Applicants who have moved to a dierent
county are able to renew their permit in their
new county of residence within the 60 day
window. They will need to provide an updated
drivers license, permit from previous county,
and approved training documentaon.
An Iowa nonprofessional permit to carry weapons
allows a permit holder concealed or open carrying
of handguns, ries, shotguns, excluding those
classied by Iowa law as oensive weapons. A
nonprofessional permit to carry weapons is valid
ve years from the date of issuance. A
nonprofessional permit is also valid to use as a
permit to acquire throughout its validity.
An Iowa professional permit to carry may be
issued when a person’s employment reasonably
juses that person going armed. A Professional
permit to carry weapons is valid for one year from
the date of issuance.

carry weapons:

2) Submit rearm training documentaon if
required.
3) Submit a copy of an Iowa driver’s license or non-
operator’s idencaon card, containing a Bremer
County address.
A) $50 fee for new applicaon
B) $25 fee for renewal applicaon
4) The State of Iowa will mail your permit card in 5-
7 business days to the mailing address stated on
the applicaon.
